2019 Meeting: Exploring the Way Ahead For Pain Medicine: Caring For the Patient and the Clinician

We are looking forward to another great meeting for the Philosophy and Ethics Special Interest Group taking place at Rydal Hall near Ambleside in Cumbria, Monday 24th -Weds 26th June 2019. People would usually travel to the venue on the afternoon of Sunday 23rd. Talks and discussion take place on the Monday and Tuesday with a break between 2 and 4 pm for relaxation and walking in the gardens and surrounding hills and lakes. There will be further talks on Wednesday morning and the meeting ends after lunch. Evenings are sometimes spent in the local pub, The Badger near the end of the drive or just enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of the hall and garden.

The title this time is: Exploring the Way Ahead For Pain Medicine: Caring For the Patient and the Clinician.

Included in the programme so far are some great speakers:

  • Dr Deepak Ravindran who is the lead clinician at the Reading Pain Clinic and interested in chronic pain and how early adverse life events can impact on pain and suffering later in life. He is interested in the complexities of pain and has a holistic approach to patient care.
  • Dr Jonathon Tomlinson is a GP in Hackney with an interest in professional values and is an In Practice Research Fellow with NIHR (National Institute for Health Research) studying moral development in medical education and clinical practice.
  • Betsan Corkhill, a wellbeing coach with an interest in pain management and the interaction between emotional trauma and physical health.
  • Dr David Laird, lead clinician in the Durham pain clinic. David is interested in whole patient care and clinical values.
  • Prof Paul Dieppe, who will speak about how the art of healing can be integrated with the science of curing.

We would be delighted if members of the other special interest groups would like to join us this year and share their ideas.

Travel

The nearest airport is Manchester. Trains go from the airport to Windermere station, taking about 2 hours. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is also about 2 hours by train, after a 10 minute shuttle bus. Both airports have a range of international and budget carriers.

Rydal Hall is to be found off the main A591 road between Ambleside and Grassmere. Approaching from Ambleside, about a mile after leaving the town, take the turning right, signposted “Rydal Mount” (brown sign) and “Rydal Hall” ( blue sign). The Hall is first on the right, through wrought iron gates. The nearest railway stations are Oxenholme and Windermere. “Rydal Church” bus stop is on A591 just 200 yards from the Hall. You can be met at this stop by arrangement.
