Today NHS has published Optimising personalised care for adults prescribed medicines associated with dependence or withdrawal symptoms - Framework for action for Integrated Care Boards and primary care.

The Framework was co-produced with a range of stakeholders including patients with lived experience and groups representing them, charities and voluntary sector organisations. It focuses on what is important to patients who have experienced dependence and withdrawal from their prescribed medicines.

The Framework includes five actions and related resources that can be adapted and used by systems to develop their own plans to support local populations and people who are taking these medicines. Alongside the Framework, case studies offer Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) and local leaders insight into the range of approaches that can be offered to patients.

To make a difference, the Framework actions need to be embedded in integrated care systems improvement delivery plans and policies, including when designing and commissioning services to support prescribed medicines withdrawal and non-medicine alternatives, such as social prescribing.
