In Memory of Professor Stephen McMahon
14th Oct 2021
The British Pain Society was sad to hear of the recent death of Professor Stephen McMahon on 9th October 2021.
Stephen was a world leading academic researcher and educator on pain mechanisms over many years. He contributed greatly to our current understanding of both pain pathways and mediators and aimed to translate this to novel pain treatments that were evaluated in clinical trials.
Professor McMahon delivered the Patrick Wall lecture at the British Pain Society Annual Scientific Meeting in 2005 and most recently delivered a plenary lecture at our virtual Annual Scientific Meeting in April 2021. In addition, he received awards for his research from numerous national and international organisations including the Academy of Medical Sciences, the British Neuroscience Association, the Australian Pain Society, the International Association for the Study of Pain, and the Physiological Society.
