We appreciate the BBC Today programme's focus on chronic pain and the latest developments presented at the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) 2024 Congress. We extend our best wishes to Kirsty Young in managing her condition. Kirsty effectively communicated the challenges of living with fibromyalgia, highlighting both her personal understanding and the broader issue of healthcare professionals' often limited understanding of this condition. These challenges are frequently echoed by those who contact the British Pain Society (BPS).
As part of our commitment to improving the lives of those living with chronic pain, the BPS contributed to the development of national guidance on the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, as outlined in the Royal College of Physicians' guidelines. We strongly welcome and advocate for enhanced education, training, research, and development across all fields of pain management, as well as initiatives that raise awareness among healthcare professionals and the public.
